Fallout 4's modding community has been churning out high quality content since the game launched, but with the G.E.C.K. Officially in their bag of tools they can now take so many of the awesome mods on the Nexus to a whole new level. So here's a list of this week's excellent mods of the week.
Alternative Start – Infinite AnswerThe heart and soul of a character is a player's ability to create something out of nothing. And Bethesda's open world approach to the Fallout franchise creates a unique opportunity for players to take the limitless resources of their imagination and build a story that will define how they wander the Commonwealth for years to come. Of course, building something out of nothing can definitely be a system of trial and error, so it helps to have a bit of a helping hand from the modding community to give you that spark of inspiration, while also removing the chains that Fallout 4's more linear storyline puts on the average character.Which is where Alternative Start – Infinite Answer by Glacknarf comes into play, a wonderful mod that takes you out of the shoes of the Sole Survivor and places you under the magnifying glass of the Institute, giving you the terrifying freedom of a Synth about to create his own set of memories. You'll get a chance to do all of the standard character creation tweaks between stats and appearance, but you'll also have the opportunity to choose from a variety of pre-set back stories that'll drop you into the Commonwealth as anything from a fresh faced member of the Brotherhood of Steel, to a lonely wanderer looking for a friend at the Atom Cats garage. Beast Master – Creature Companion Overhaul. There have been numerous mods out there that add new companions to the repertoire of Super Mutants, private eyes, and drunken mercenaries that Fallout 4 brings to the table by default.

But of the ones that bring some of the wasteland's most dangerous creatures to your side, there are few if any that make sense, and only one that requires you to see to the creature's well being in order to boost their combat effectiveness as a whole.Beast Master – Creatures Companion Overhaul, by modder steelfeathers, gives you a variety of options to tame and train the creatures and animals of the Commonwealth to join you in battle. To get started capture a creature using the Wasteland Workshop, then either implant them with a control chip or use a high-level charisma perk to tame them through the Disney Princess power of your voice. Once tamed, you'll be able to control your creatures just like any other companion, and you'll even have a number of options on how to customize their appearance and carry weight with various tattoos and items, change up their combat style with specific commands, give them a snazzy new name if the proper mood strikes, and cook up whatever treats a Deathclaw and a Yao Guai take in exchange for their loyal service. All of which will affect their happiness and eventually lead to increased health and damage based off of this stat.
It's a huge step up from the average animal companion mod and, needless to say, it's a lot of fun to watch your pet Deathclaw rip your enemies limb from limb for a biscuit. Unique Uniques – Unique Weapons Redone.
The legendary system Bethesda rolled out for Fallout 4 added a lot of happy days for those of us that love loot in all its shiny legendary glory, but there's no denying that a number of the unique items in the game were rendered a little moot by the system as a whole. After all, who cares about getting your hands on Pickman's Blade when you have a fully automatic legendary submachine gun that applies the same amount of bleed damage at a 1000 rounds per minute? Considering that most of the unique weapons also don't look any different from the default, it's a deadly combination that left a number of the cooler unique weapons in the game more than a little underwhelming.Of course, thanks to the blood, sweat, and toil of good ol' Trainwiz we have Unique Uniques, a mod that brings a bin of Vim and vinegar to the unique weapons scattered across the Commonwealth via a retexture and an overhaul of each weapon's abilities to make them truly unique. Each unique weapon now functions with a set of effects outside of the pool of standard legendary items, but the effect can also be detached from its unique forefather and slapped onto a similar weapon (similar to the way Kremvh's Tooth functions for machetes). All in all, the new effects are both interesting and a nice balance between overpowered and comical. For example, Old Faithful will now one shot a single enemy once every 24 hours, while Zao's Sword is “empowered with communism” and will deal more damage the less money you keep on hand. Owned – Own Diamond City.
If your character had dreams of owning a real estate empire, or simply using the settlement system to create the Commonwealth's next big mega mall, you may have felt that the numerous settlements spread liberally across the land paled in comparison to the glowing green paint of Diamond City. Fortunately, thanks to the work of modder SparrowPrince, Diamond City's real estate is officially on the market. All of it, potentially at half off, all depending on whether the current owner is alive or dead.Owned – Own Diamond City, gives you the ability to purchase almost any of the shops or homes in Diamond City and do whatever the heck you want with them. Each location is workshop enabled, and you can set up various forms of trade and settlement style contraptions within each hovel if you happen to kill the locum-tenens in order to get the property at a steep discount. Each property will also generate a passive income, so you'll have an opportunity to both recoup your wealth and set up the empire that will keep your family rolling in caps long into the post-apocalyptic future. Manufacturing Extended.
Fallout 4's Contraptions Workshop DLC has a whole host of useful odds, ends, gadgets, and even a few gizmos to cater to your every logical whim. Of course, there are some glaringly large holes in some of the machines, and it's nearly impossible to take the human factor out of your fully automated teddy bear cannon.
Which is where Kentington's Manufacturing Extended mod comes in beautifully, filling in the gaps in ammo crafting, and making it possible to create and breakdown virtually every piece of junk in your repertoire. If you were a little underwhelmed by Bethesda's fourth official DLC as a whole, it's worth taking the time to mod it so that it better fits your needs.
